Verstappen: Sprint pole gap ‘no big shock’

Max Verstappen shrugged off his half-second deficit in Sprint qualifying at the Qatar Grand Prix, insisting Red Bull’s setup choices were always geared toward Sunday’s main race rather than a one-lap flyer.

The defending champion, who lines up fifth for Saturday’s Sprint, trailed pole-sitter Lando Norris by 0.522 seconds under the Lusail floodlights. Norris edged out Mercedes’ George Russell by a razor-thin 0.063 seconds to claim top spot, with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and Russell’s new partner Kimi Antonelli completing the top four.

Verstappen explained the gap stemmed from deliberate tweaks to boost tire life and race pace, especially with Qatar’s abrasive track surface demanding careful management. “We’re not chasing quali glory here,” he said post-session. “The real points come tomorrow and Sunday, so we dialed in for that. It’s no shock we’re off the pace in a short run.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner echoed the sentiment, noting the team’s data showed strong long-run simulations despite the qualifying shortfall. “Max extracted what he could from the car,” Horner added. “We’ve seen this track bite hard on tires before, so our focus is endurance over outright speed.”

Norris, meanwhile, praised McLaren’s balance after his lap of 1m20.610s. “It felt hooked up from the start,” he said. “Tiny margins like that against George show how tight this field is.”

With the 2025 title fight heating up—Verstappen leading Norris by 52 points heading into this round—the Sprint offers a quick 24-lap hit before the full Grand Prix, where strategy could flip the script.
