Formula 1 teams rolled out major upgrades at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, aiming to shake up the pecking order in the 2025 season. McLaren led the charge with a revamped floor on their MCL39, designed to boost downforce in high-speed corners like Eau Rouge. Engineers say the tweaks cut drag by 5%, potentially handing Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri an edge over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who’s been dominant so far.

Ferrari countered with aero refinements to their SF-25, including slimmer sidepods and a new rear wing. Charles Leclerc tested the package in Friday practice, clocking times that suggest a two-tenths gain per lap. Lewis Hamilton, now in red overalls, praised the stability it brings to the car’s unpredictable handling on Spa’s undulating layout.

Mercedes, meanwhile, focused on engine mapping updates for their W16, squeezing more power from the hybrid unit without risking reliability. George Russell noted improved traction out of slow corners, vital for overtakes at Les Combes. Aston Martin and Alpine also debuted minor diffuser changes, but it’s Red Bull’s subtle front wing flex that’s raising eyebrows—rumors swirl it could be pushing the regs, with the FIA set to scrutinize it post-race.

These mods come at a critical juncture, with the championship fight tightening after Verstappen’s recent slip-ups. If they deliver, Spa could mark a turning point before the summer break.
