Russell: Spa P5 ‘Flatters’ Mercedes’ True Pace

George Russell has labelled his fifth-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix as a result that masks Mercedes’ true struggles, urging the team to hunt for answers during the summer shutdown.

Starting from seventh on the grid at Spa-Francorchamps, Russell clawed his way forward with a bold one-stop strategy, but he admitted post-race that the car’s underlying speed was nowhere near competitive. “We got lucky with the tyres holding up, but let’s be honest – we’re not where we need to be,” he told reporters. “P5 flatters us. The pack ahead was pulling away, and we have to face that reality.”

His rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, in his debut season with Mercedes, echoed the sentiment after finishing eighth, highlighting how the W16’s handling in the Ardennes’ tricky conditions exposed weaknesses in high-speed corners. The pair’s combined points haul offered some relief, but Russell stressed the need for rapid improvements. “The break is our chance to reset. We’ve got data from here – now it’s about turning it into lap time before Monza.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the gap to frontrunners like Red Bull and Ferrari, where Lewis Hamilton – now paired with Charles Leclerc – secured a podium. “George is right; we can’t rely on strategy alone,” Wolff said. “The focus is on upgrades to close that delta.”

With the championship battle heating up, Russell remains optimistic but pragmatic. “We’re fighters, but we need the tools. Let’s see what the factory delivers.”
