Lawson Reflects on Verstappen After Surprising F1 Milestone

In an unexpected turn of events, Liam Lawson clinched a stunning result for Racing Bulls by surpassing Max Verstappen and his formidable Red Bull team at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This marked a rare occasion where Verstappen found himself finishing outside the top six, landing in ninth place, just a spot behind Lawson at the Hungaroring.

For Lawson, this race was particularly significant. It was the first instance in his Formula 1 career where he outperformed the reigning World Champion when both completed the race. Despite driving for the sister team, Lawson’s performance was a testament to his growing prowess on the track.

The weekend proved challenging for Red Bull, with motorsport advisor Helmut Marko acknowledging persistent tyre issues that plagued their performance. Nevertheless, Lawson’s ability to leverage these difficulties to his advantage underscores his strategic acumen and adaptability.

Reflecting on his performance, Lawson expressed a mix of surprise and satisfaction at besting his more seasoned rival. “At the start, Max was very fast, and he overtook me in the opening lap,” Lawson recounted. “But as the race progressed, their tyre struggles became apparent, and I managed to maintain my position.”

This race represents the third time Lawson has secured points in the last four events leading up to the summer break, signaling a remarkable upswing in his form. His recent successes have narrowed the gap to Isack Hadjar in the Drivers’ standings to just two points, showing that his efforts are yielding results.

Lawson attributes his improved performances to minor yet impactful adjustments in his Racing Bulls car and his growing comfort behind the wheel. “Since Austria, I’ve felt much more at ease with the car,” he noted, emphasizing that the speed has been present since the team’s strategic shift earlier in the year.

As the season progresses, Lawson remains focused on sustaining his momentum and learning from each race. “Consistency is crucial,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of refining what works and carrying it forward.
