Former Haas Chief Guenther Steiner in ‘False Report’ MotoGP Allegation

In the world of MotoGP, where whispers of financial maneuvers often ripple through the paddock, a recent rumor has captured attention, albeit briefly. Tech3 MotoGP team owner Herve Poncharal has firmly rebutted claims suggesting that he has sold his team to Guenther Steiner, the former Haas F1 team principal. This speculation surged during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, yet Poncharal has categorically labeled it as unfounded.

Guenther Steiner, a recognizable figure in motorsport circles, particularly after his tenure at Haas came to an end before the 2024 F1 season, has transitioned into roles away from the paddock, primarily as a media personality. Despite his current engagements, Steiner’s name surfaced in conversations about Tech3 due to his exploratory discussions with Poncharal about potential investments.

Tech3, a KTM satellite team, is navigating uncertain financial waters, compounded by KTM’s broader fiscal challenges. Despite securing a $632 million package to address immediate debts, the company faces a daunting $2.3 billion in outstanding commitments. This precarious financial backdrop has prompted Poncharal to explore various investment avenues, with Steiner’s involvement being one of many possibilities.

The MotoGP landscape is experiencing a surge in investor interest, catalyzed by Liberty Media’s recent acquisition of its commercial rights. Liberty Media, which completed the purchase of Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder to MotoGP, for $4.9 billion, now owns an 84% stake. This development is anticipated to usher in a period of growth within the sport, potentially increasing team valuations in the foreseeable future.

Despite the fertile ground for investment, Poncharal has been quick to quell any premature conclusions about a deal with Steiner. In an interview with GPOne, he dismissed the reports as “fake news,” emphasizing that while discussions are ongoing, no formal agreement has been reached. “I am very annoyed by these new rumors and speculations,” Poncharal stated, underscoring the absence of substantive developments.

As Tech3 navigates this period of uncertainty, it has yet to commit to the next MotoGP racing era starting in 2027. Such a commitment could significantly enhance the team’s value, reflecting the optimism surrounding Liberty Media’s strategic involvement. Meanwhile, on the track, Tech3 holds seventh in the current team standings, with Maverick Vinales delivering a notable fifth-place finish at the French Grand Prix.

In the midst of these swirling narratives, the potential for Tech3 and MotoGP at large appears bound for evolution, shaped by the intersections of investment, strategic partnerships, and the sport’s ongoing appeal.
