Formula One Management (FOM) has revealed the financial impact of the highly successful F1-themed movie, which, despite generating over $500 million at the global box office, brought the organization less than $20 million in revenue. Released in June with Brad Pitt and Damson Idris leading the cast and Lewis Hamilton serving as an executive producer, the film enjoyed extensive collaboration with Formula One Management during its production in 2023 and 2024.
The film’s influence was particularly noted in Liberty Media’s second-quarter financial results, where it was highlighted as a significant cultural milestone that boosted viewership and social media engagement. However, as Brian Wendling, Liberty Media’s chief accounting officer, explained to analysts, the film contributed only a modest “mid-teens” million-dollar figure to FOM’s revenue for the quarter, a mere fraction of Liberty Media’s $1.226 billion revenue.
Stefano Domenicali, Formula One Management’s president and CEO, emphasized the film’s broader impact beyond immediate financial returns, citing its potential to enhance the sport’s global profile and generate future economic opportunities. He pointed out the movie’s remarkable performance in mature markets and its anticipated release on Apple’s streaming platform as factors likely to sustain interest and financial benefits over time.
Domenicali remarked on the film’s role in expanding Formula 1’s “circular economy,” suggesting that its cultural impact could eventually translate into substantial monetary gains for the sport’s ecosystem and stakeholders. Despite the relatively small immediate financial gain, the film’s success underscores a strategic investment in the sport’s long-term growth and visibility.
