Headline: McLaren land Red Bull’s strategy chief Will Courtenay in early switch to Sporting Director role

After more than two decades calling the shots from Red Bull’s strategy room, Will Courtenay has swapped Milton Keynes blue for papaya. The veteran tactician has officially started at McLaren as sporting director — months earlier than initially planned — in a move that subtly reshapes the paddock’s power map ahead of F1’s 2026 reset.

Courtenay, part of the Red Bull operation since its 2005 debut and head of race strategy since 2010, had been announced as McLaren-bound back in September 2024. The original understanding was that he’d see out his contract until mid-2026. Instead, he’s reported for duty at Woking in time to influence the run-up to the new regulations, and will report to racing director Randeep Singh.

“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Sporting Director at McLaren Racing!” Courtenay said. “After 22 years at Red Bull Racing, the last 15 as Head of Race Strategy there, I’m excited to say I’m now embarking on a new challenge, joining the McLaren Racing Formula 1 Team as Sporting Director.”

He added a nod to the team he leaves behind: “I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone I worked with at Red Bull. I made so many great friends there… It was an incredible two and a bit decades. But now I’m looking forward to settling into my new role and team… as I do my very best to help McLaren continue its recent success in the coming years.”

The accelerated start date points to an agreement between the teams to release him early — a familiar dance when senior talent crosses the divide. For McLaren, it’s another high‑grade addition to Andrea Stella’s leadership group as the team trims its processes and sharpens its race-day execution with 2026 looming.

“Will’s experience, professionalism, and passion for motorsport make him the ideal candidate to lead our sporting function,” said Stella. “We are now entering a key phase in our journey as a team, and we are confident that he will be a great addition to our strong leadership team as we strive to continue challenging for wins and championships.”

Courtenay’s arrival continues a quiet churn at Red Bull that began in late 2024. The team saw sporting director Jonathan Wheatley depart to become team principal at Sauber/Audi, while Adrian Newey left to join Aston Martin as managing technical partner and subsequently team principal. At the time of Courtenay’s move being announced, Helmut Marko framed it as the natural ebb and flow of a successful operation, while hinting McLaren’s package — responsibility and remuneration — was simply stronger.

“What we offered Will Courtenay was not of interest to him,” Marko said. “Then he received an offer for the role of sporting director, and it was something more attractive for him, also on an economic level.”

Red Bull hasn’t confirmed Courtenay’s replacement. Marko suggested principal strategy engineer Hannah Schmitz is the natural successor, a logical internal elevation for one of the paddock’s most respected race callers.

For McLaren, appointing a career strategist to the sporting director role is as on-brand as it gets: lean into racecraft, squeeze value out of the ruleset, and fortify operations before the 2026 regulations flip the chessboard. Courtenay’s remit will sit at the intersection of FIA liaison, event operations and live decision-making — the connective tissue that often separates a podium from a P5 when the race goes sideways.

The bigger picture? McLaren’s rebuild has been about more than wind tunnels and front wings. It’s been about people and process, and the hire reads like a final stitch before the next era begins. Red Bull, meanwhile, has been here before: lose a big hitter, promote smartly, and move on. On paper, both teams will feel they’ve played this one well.

The real verdict will come on Sundays. And Courtenay, of all people, knows that’s where the margins are made.
