FIA imposes major points cut and five-minute sanction after official collision

The Rally Finland, a pivotal round in the 2025 World Rally Championship, took an unexpected turn when Hyundai’s Ott Tänak faced a significant setback due to an altercation with a scrutineer. Tänak, known for his aggressive driving style and 2019 championship win, found himself amidst controversy after an incident during the rally’s seventh stage.

Struggling with an overheating engine caused by earlier damage to his i20N Rally 1 car, Tänak was under strict instructions from his team to maintain airflow by keeping the car in motion. However, during a routine tyre check, tensions flared when Tänak, eager to manage his car’s temperature, inadvertently struck a scrutineer, resulting in minor injuries to the official.

The FIA, after a thorough review, determined Tänak’s actions violated several articles of the 2025 FIA International Sporting Code, specifically those pertaining to unsafe behavior and failure to comply with official directives. Consequently, Tänak was handed a five-minute time penalty, a decision that plunged him from a promising tenth to a disappointing twenty-ninth position. Additionally, a suspended 35-point deduction looms over him, contingent on any similar future infractions this season.

Despite this setback, Tänak managed to claw his way back to a tenth-place finish, maintaining his fourth position in the overall drivers’ standings, albeit 13 points behind leader Elfyn Evans. The weekend was further marred for Hyundai as teammates Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux experienced punctures, allowing Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä to seize victory and close in on Evans’ championship lead.

Tänak, in his post-race reflections, expressed a pragmatic view of the incident and the challenges faced by Hyundai. “It’s been a tough weekend,” he conceded, “but we must look ahead. With upcoming gravel events where we’ve shown strong performances, I am optimistic about regaining our pace.”

As the championship progresses, the battle remains open, with Tänak and Hyundai eager to shift focus from the setbacks of Finland to the opportunities that lie in the remaining rounds of the season.
