From Scalpel to Suzuka: Natalie Pinkham Returns

Sky F1 will have one of its most familiar faces back in the mix at Suzuka later this month, with Natalie Pinkham confirming she’s been cleared to return to long-haul travel after neck surgery.

Pinkham hasn’t worked a race since Monza last September, when she signed off by telling viewers she’d be “out of action for a bit”. The plan at the time was to be back for Interlagos in November, only for her recovery to drag on longer than expected and force a late change to Sky’s on-site lineup in São Paulo.

In a short message posted on social media, Pinkham said she’s now been given “the all clear” following what she described as a “quite difficult” five months of rehab. The Japanese Grand Prix will be her first appearance of the 2026 Formula 1 season for the broadcaster.

“Hi friends,” she said. “So, it has been a long, and if I’m completely honest, quite difficult five months of rehab since my neck surgery, but I’m really happy to say that I have been given the all clear to do long hauls again.

“My first [race] that I will be presenting for Sky F1 this year is Japan. And I am really happy about that because I bloody love Suzuka, so very excited to see you then.”

It’s a return that matters in a very Sky-specific way. Pinkham has been a constant through the broadcaster’s era of UK and Ireland live F1 coverage dating back to 2012, and her absence has been one of those subtle but noticeable changes in the rhythm of a race weekend — particularly on the ground, where she’s long been part of the channel’s grid and paddock texture.

And, in fairly typical Pinkham fashion, the update didn’t stop at the medical clearance. She also joked about the metalwork at the back of her neck making its first intercontinental trip, explaining she’s nicknamed it “Karen” because “she moans a lot”.

That sense of humour has been a feature of her recovery too. Pinkham previously invited fans to name her neck scar, with suggestions ranging from ‘Sabrina Scar-penter’ to ‘O-scar Piastri’. The one that landed — ‘Scarlos Sainz’ — came with a neat bit of crossover: Williams driver Carlos Sainz recorded a short video to confirm the winning choice. The fan behind it, Chris Farrow, is set to receive signed Williams merchandise.

The response to Pinkham’s return announcement has been predictably warm, with fans piling into the comments to welcome her back after a stop-start recovery that at one stage ruled out her intended Brazil comeback.

Suzuka, then, gets an extra little subplot on the broadcast side: not a driver return, not a technical update, but one of the voices and faces many viewers associate with the sport’s weekend-to-weekend cadence. For Pinkham, it’s also a line in the sand — the point where “rehab” finally turns back into “race week”.
