Lando Norris’ Silent Coup: F1’s New Order

Lando Norris isn’t interested in the pecking order debate. Not after the year he’s just had.

Fresh from sealing the 2025 Formula 1 world title in Abu Dhabi, Norris brushed off the urge to stack himself against Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri or anyone else. He’s never been one for the “who’s best?” pub talk — and he wasn’t about to start now.

“I hate ever having to try and compare myself to other people,” he said. “All I try and do every weekend is the best of what I can… write what you like, decide what you like.”

For all the noise around him, the story of Norris’ season is simple: the McLaren driver was razor-sharp when it mattered most. He reeled in Piastri through a relentless second half, and when Verstappen and Red Bull hit their stride after the summer, Norris kept the bleeding under control. By the final lap of the year, it added up to a title won by the thinnest of cushions — two points over Verstappen — and one that felt earned the hard way.

McLaren gave him a car that set the tone early, and for a while it looked like both titles might be wrapped long before the desert sunset. But Red Bull found speed as the year wore on, and Piastri — fast as ever — led much of the campaign. McLaren, crucially, didn’t enforce a pecking order. That made for some cold sweats on the pit wall and a Drivers’ Championship that went all the way to Yas Marina, even as the Constructors’ crown was banked earlier.

Under that pressure, Norris’ edge was consistency. He didn’t need fireworks every Sunday; he needed fewer errors and the habit of turning good days into big scores, damage days into small losses. He delivered exactly that.

“I certainly feel like at moments I’ve driven better than I feel like other people can,” he admitted, before immediately checking himself. “Have I made my mistakes? Yes. Is there stuff Max could do better than me at times? Yes. Do I believe he’s unbeatable? No… it’s hard to know.”

There’s respect there, and plenty of it. Verstappen was relentlessly dangerous once Red Bull unlocked more from the RB21. Piastri, in the other McLaren, was quick enough often enough to be the biggest headache in-house. That Norris threaded the needle between both says as much about his mentality as his speed.

And that’s the real shift. Early in his career, Norris wore the bad days on his sleeve. In 2025 he looked… calmer. Sharper. More certain of himself and of the way he wanted to go racing.

“I feel like I managed to win it the way I wanted to win it,” he said. “Not trying to be as aggressive as Max or as forceful as other champions might have been. I’m happy I could go out and be myself and win it Lando’s way, as Andrea [Stella] would tell me.”

That last line tells you everything. This wasn’t a driver reinventing himself to fit a cliché of what a champion should be. It was a driver doubling down on who he is — quick, measured, maybe a touch stubborn about doing it on his terms — and trusting that would be enough.

It was, just. The late-season picture narrowed to Norris doing exactly what the situation demanded and no more. The points he took off Piastri came via clean execution, not elbows. The points he gave up to Verstappen were kept to a minimum. In a title race this tight, that pragmatism is gold dust.

As for the greatest-driver discourse, he’s not biting.

“My motivation is not here to prove I’m better than someone else,” Norris said. “I’ve just done what I’ve needed to do to win the world championship. I made my people happy. That’s all I really care about at the end of the day.”

We can debate the pecking order forever — this is F1, after all — but 2025 didn’t need a verdict from the court of public opinion. It needed clean laps under pressure, and on that front nobody did it better. Norris didn’t just win the title; he won it with a quiet authority that should worry the rest. If this is the baseline version of Lando, comfortable in his own skin and ruthless when the lights go out, the next act could be even more serious.
