Lightning Looms, F1 Yanks Miami Start Three Hours Early

Formula 1 has pulled the Miami Grand Prix three hours forward, with Sunday’s race now set to start at 13:00 local time after weather forecasts pointed to heavier rain and thunderstorms later in the afternoon.

The change was confirmed in a joint statement from the FIA, Formula One Management and the Miami Grand Prix promoter following discussions after qualifying. Miami had originally been scheduled to go out at 16:00, but the sport has opted to get the race underway earlier to give itself the best possible chance of running to completion without the kind of late-day disruption that can quickly turn a grand prix into a waiting game.

“Following discussions between FIA, FOM and the Miami promoter, the decision has been taken to move the start of Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix to 13:00 local time in Miami due to the weather forecast that is expected to bring heavier rainstorms later in the afternoon close to the original planned race start time,” the statement said.

It added that the move was made “to ensure the least amount of disruption to the race, and to ensure the maximum possible window to complete the Grand Prix in the best conditions and to prioritise the safety of drivers, fans, teams and staff.”

In practical terms, it’s a rare but not unprecedented bit of calendar flexibility — and it tells you plenty about how seriously F1 and the FIA are taking the storm threat. When lightning and intense downpours are in the mix, it’s not just visibility and grip that become concerns; operational restrictions and safety protocols can box the event into a corner surprisingly quickly. Moving the start earlier is effectively buying time: more daylight, more margin for red flags, and more breathing room if the forecast arrives on schedule.

The paddock had been buzzing about contingency plans as soon as the Sunday outlook firmed up, and the decision came with the usual calculation: it’s less damaging to upset routines and timetables now than risk a stop-start afternoon where the race distance becomes a question mark.

Further details on Sunday operations are expected to follow.
