Max Verstappen speculates on Hamilton after FIA probe

Max Verstappen’s Hungarian Grand Prix clash with Lewis Hamilton has sparked a conversation about the intricacies of Formula 1’s racing etiquette. During the mid-race tussle at the Hungaroring, Verstappen made a daring move on Hamilton at Turn 4, causing the latter to veer off track, although no contact occurred. This maneuver led to an FIA investigation, as it seemed to challenge the boundaries of aggressive racing without physical interaction.

Verstappen’s disbelief was palpable when the stewards decided to scrutinize the incident. “Nothing happened,” he remarked, emphasizing that the lack of contact made the investigation seem unnecessary. His argument leaned on the fact that Hamilton did not attend the post-race hearing, suggesting a tacit agreement that the incident was inconsequential.

The stewards ultimately cleared Verstappen of any wrongdoing, citing the absence of contact and Hamilton’s decision not to contest the corner. This decision was supported by Ferrari’s acknowledgment that Hamilton chose to exit the track.

Despite the turmoil, Verstappen’s primary concern was not the investigation but the performance of his car. He finished ninth, a season-low, while Hamilton ended up twelfth, missing out on points entirely. Verstappen expressed frustration over the complexity of racing rules, noting the lack of clarity and the perceived redundancy of the hearing.

The incident, while a minor spectacle in the grand scheme of the race, highlighted the competitive tension between top drivers. With the summer break ahead, Verstappen sits 15 points clear of George Russell, poised to challenge the McLaren duo at the top of the standings.
