Max Verstappen’s ‘demoralizing’ remark examined at Hungarian GP

Max Verstappen’s recent remarks about Red Bull’s performance have sparked discussions throughout the Formula 1 community, with some questioning the psychological impact on the team. Following a challenging weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Verstappen struggled with grip issues, he expressed doubt over Red Bull’s prospects for the remainder of the season. “No, not the way things are going right now,” Verstappen told the Dutch media when asked about the possibility of future victories in 2025.

This candid assessment, while highlighting his frustration, has drawn criticism from industry figures like Bernie Collins, a former strategist at Aston Martin. Collins suggests that such comments, although reflective of Verstappen’s dissatisfaction with the car’s performance, could inadvertently demoralize the team. “I don’t think any driver says we’re not going to win anything this year as a motivator to the team,” Collins remarked, pointing out the potential negative impact on the engineering staff.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was a notable low point for Verstappen this season, as he barely made it past Q2 and ultimately qualified eighth. Despite these setbacks, Verstappen remains a key contender in the Drivers’ Championship, although his lead over George Russell has narrowed to just 15 points.

Looking ahead, the focus for Red Bull, under the guidance of Laurent Mekies, will be on addressing longstanding technical issues and fostering a stronger team dynamic. Verstappen’s outspoken approach may serve as a catalyst for change, prompting the team to enhance the car’s competitiveness for the upcoming races and beyond. His comments underscore the urgency for Red Bull to innovate and adapt if they are to regain their winning form.
