Mercedes is ditching its latest rear suspension upgrade for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, marking the second time the team has backtracked on the spec since introducing it at Imola in May.
The move comes as the Brackley squad scrambles to halt a worrying slide in form, with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli struggling for pace in recent races. Sources close to the team indicate that engineers pinpointed the upgraded suspension as a potential culprit behind inconsistent handling and tyre wear, prompting a return to the original setup to gather clearer data at the demanding Hungaroring.
Team principal Toto Wolff admitted the decision followed intense internal discussions, stressing the need for stability over experimentation at this stage. “We’ve seen flashes of potential with the W16, but consistency is key,” Wolff said. “Rolling back allows us to baseline our performance and build from there.”
Alongside the suspension tweak, Mercedes has rolled out minor aerodynamic adjustments aimed at better managing tyre temperatures on the circuit’s tight, twisty layout. Russell, who secured a podium in Austria earlier this month, expressed optimism: “It’s about finding that sweet spot. Hungary’s always a test of balance, and these changes should help us push harder.”
Antonelli, the teenage rookie adapting to his first full F1 season, echoed the sentiment, noting the car’s improved feel in simulations. However, rivals like Red Bull and Ferrari are expected to bring their own updates, intensifying the battle in what could be a pivotal weekend for Mercedes’ championship hopes.
With the summer break looming, a strong showing here is vital for morale. The team sits third in the constructors’ standings, but closing the gap to the leaders will demand quick fixes. Eyes will be on qualifying tomorrow to see if this bold reset pays off.
