Oscar Piastri powered through a chaotic mix of rain and drying track to claim victory at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, holding off a fierce late charge from championship leader Max Verstappen.
The McLaren driver started from pole and managed the shifting conditions at Spa-Francorchamps with precision, switching from intermediates to slicks at just the right moment. Rain hit early, scrambling strategies across the grid, but as the circuit dried, Piastri built a lead that seemed unassailable—until Verstappen, starting from fourth in his Red Bull, began reeling him in.
With 10 laps to go, the Dutchman closed to within two seconds, pressuring Piastri on fresher tyres after a bold pit stop. But the Australian stayed composed, fending off the attacks to cross the line 1.2 seconds ahead.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton rounded out the podium in third, capitalizing on a clean race to edge out teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth after a slow stop dropped him back.
Lando Norris, Piastri’s McLaren teammate, recovered from a messy start to take fifth, while Mercedes’ George Russell struggled with tyre wear in the variable weather and settled for sixth.
This win narrows Verstappen’s points lead to 15 over Piastri, injecting fresh drama into the title fight with eight races left. The Red Bull ace admitted post-race: “We pushed hard, but Oscar drove flawlessly today.”
Next up, the teams head to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, where dry conditions could shift the momentum again.
