Stewards Hammer Bortoleto: Vegas Stroll Clash Sparks Qatar Grid Drop

FIA hits Bortoleto with five-place grid drop for Qatar after lap-one clash with Stroll in Vegas

Gabriel Bortoleto will carry a five-place grid penalty into the Qatar Grand Prix after the Las Vegas opener turned messy between the Sauber rookie and Lance Stroll. The FIA has also added two penalty points to Bortoleto’s Super Licence.

The pair arrived in Las Vegas with some fresh history. In Brazil, Stroll squeezed Bortoleto in wheel-to-wheel combat and the Sauber ended up skating across the grass and into the wall. No action was taken then, and Bortoleto later cooled his radio anger and called it a racing incident.

Under the lights on the Strip, there wasn’t the same leniency. Starting 18th, Bortoleto fired up the inside into Turn 1, misjudged the braking, and clattered into the Aston Martin. Stroll was out immediately; Bortoleto tried to limp on but parked it on lap two.

After reviewing the footage, stewards said the Sauber had braked “extremely late,” placing clear responsibility for the collision on Bortoleto. While lap-one, turn-one moments often invite a softer view, they judged there were no mitigating circumstances. The standard 10-second time penalty was therefore in order, but because Bortoleto retired, it’s been converted into a five-place grid drop for the next race he contests, per the guidelines. The two licence points accompany the sanction.

For Sauber, it’s a headache heading to Lusail. A rookie already fighting from the lower reaches of the grid now faces an even steeper Saturday. For Aston Martin, Stroll’s zero in Vegas was a straight gut punch in a season where every constructors’ point will matter.

It’s also a timely reminder that turn one on a street circuit is a high-risk, high-reward game. Sometimes you thread the needle. Sometimes you end up in Race Control’s bad books. Bortoleto’s learning curve just got a little sharper.
