Verstappen Clarifies Towel Controversy Amid FIA’s Red Bull Measures

The Hungarian Grand Prix preparations took an unexpected turn for Red Bull Racing when Max Verstappen found himself grappling with an unusual challenge. During Free Practice 2, Verstappen encountered a face towel inadvertently left in his cockpit, leading to a moment of quick thinking. As he navigated Turn 3, the reigning champion carefully maneuvered off the racing line, removed the towel, and tossed it aside, ensuring it didn’t hinder his control or safety.

The incident was swiftly brought to the attention of the FIA race stewards, who deliberated on whether it constituted an unsafe release. Traditionally, such scenarios might result in a financial penalty for the team. However, after considering Verstappen’s explanation, the stewards opted for a warning, recognizing the driver’s intent to mitigate any risk by discarding the towel.

Verstappen addressed the media, clarifying the situation. “It was just a face towel that somehow stayed in the car,” he explained. “I knew it could become a hazard if left in the cockpit, so I took action to remove it in the safest possible way.”

Despite this peculiar episode, Red Bull’s focus remained on overcoming their struggles at the Hungaroring. Verstappen admitted to difficulties with the car’s balance, describing the experience as akin to “driving on ice.” He expressed hope for improvements, acknowledging that the team needed to identify and rectify the issues affecting performance.

While Verstappen grappled with these challenges, his teammate Yuki Tsunoda delivered a more promising performance, securing ninth position in the session. As the team looks ahead to the race weekend, they aim to refine their strategy and ensure no further distractions arise, particularly those of the towel variety.
