Verstappen’s ’15 Quali Laps’ Heroics Secure Sprint Win

Max Verstappen clinched victory in the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix Sprint at Spa-Francorchamps, but holding onto that win demanded a deep dive into his qualifying efforts—specifically, 15 laps that proved crucial under scrutiny.

The Red Bull driver started from pole in the shortened race format, fending off challenges from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell. Verstappen built an early lead, crossing the line 3.2 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Russell taking third. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, starting from the second row, pushed hard but settled for fourth, while teammate Lando Norris rounded out the top five.

The drama unfolded post-race when officials questioned Verstappen’s pole-setting lap in Sprint Qualifying. A minor track limits infringement in SQ3 prompted a review, forcing stewards to examine all 15 of his laps across the three qualifying segments. After a tense 45-minute deliberation, they confirmed his times were clean, upholding the result.

“It’s frustrating to have it hanging in the balance like that,” Verstappen said afterward. “We put in the work during quali, and those laps were spot on. Glad it’s sorted—now eyes on the main race.”

This marks Verstappen’s second Sprint win of the season, boosting his championship lead over Leclerc by eight points. With rain forecast for Sunday’s Grand Prix, grid positions could shake up further, especially with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton starting from P6 after a gearbox tweak penalty.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised the effort: “Max drove flawlessly. That review was thorough, but it shows the margins in this sport.” As the season hits its midpoint, Verstappen’s consistency keeps him ahead in a tightly contested field.
