Ferrari is standing at the crossroads of engineering chemistry and political necessity. Lewis Hamilton walked into Maranello expecting a cultural shift—not a cultural standoff—and the friction with Riccardo Adami is no longer whispered; it’s sung from pit lanes, studio sets, and media bays across F1.
When Vasseur says, “We’re evaluating all options,” it’s not a deflection. It’s a signal flare.
Ferrari is actively hunting for a voice Lewis trusts, and with 2026 bringing a seismic regulation reset, the timing is perfect for a reboot.
Below is the FOFA shortlist—the names quietly circulating inside senior-level engineering circles, plus a few “if Ferrari really wants to win” options that fit Hamilton’s style, communication cadence, and race-craft psychology.
So, what I will do here is list them out in a tier format:
TIER 1: INTERNAL FERRARI OPTIONS
RICCARDO ADAMI (status: questionable)
Current engineer. Solid résumé. Deep Ferrari DNA.
But the chemistry with Lewis is off. Way off.
The 2025 radio transcripts sound like two people reading from different scripts in different movies.
Adami only remains if Ferrari decides consistency outweighs compatibility.
RICCARDO CORTE (performance + systems background)
More of a hybrid engineer than a pure “driver whisperer,” but Ferrari has eyed him for driver-facing responsibilities before.
He’s methodical, structured, and exceptionally clear in communication.
My verdict on this prospect: He’s a dark horse candidate if Ferrari wants a clean-sheet culture refresh.
TIER 2: EX-MERCEDES + LEWIS-ADJACENT TALENT
DOM RIEFSTAHL (Mercedes)
One of the best systems/race-support engineers in F1.
Knows Hamilton’s rhythms, understands his information flow, and has worked directly with “Bono’s” operational style.
But there’s a barrier…
Mercedes contract handcuffs.
But for a race engineer? Less restrictive than the no-poach clause that protected Bono himself.
If Mercedes falter early in 2026, this becomes real.
TIER 3: THE WOMAN LEWIS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE — AND THE FANS KNOW IT
Here is my dream pick for the role. Almost guaranteed synergy in my opinion.
RUTH BUSCOMBE (ex-Ferrari, ex-Haas, now F1 Commission role)
The most compelling wildcard on the board.
Why I believe Ruth fits Lewis…
She’s a Brilliant strategist who is decidedly calm under pressure. She’s a very clear communicator. She’s also quite Ferrari-compatible. Ruth knows the politics, has a deep analytical brain, and is highly respected by drivers for her clarity and trust-building skills.
Lewis has openly supported more women in technical roles than just about anyone, and Ruth’s style matches Hamilton’s data-anchored approach to race reading.
Yes, I’m high on Ruth, but there are some potential barriers:
She’s currently in broader FIA/F1 roles
Pulling her back into a full-time race-engineer seat requires a tailored offer
Ferrari would need to justify the optics of “poaching an FIA official,” but it has precedent.
So here’s my verdict on Ruth Buscombe:
If Vasseur wants a SYMBOLIC shift—culture, inclusivity, intellectual diversity, a break from old-school Ferrari hierarchy —Ruth is the statement hire.
And she’s absolutely qualified.
TIER 4: THE LONG-SHOT NAMES FLOATING IN THE PADDOCK
Andrew Shovlin (Mercedes) — no chance
Corporate lifer. High-ranking. Will not be released.
Xevi Pujolar (Sauber/Audi)
Massive experience.
But Audi/Sauber are circling the drain politically and might lose key staff in 2026 shake-ups.
If he jumps ship, Ferrari is an immediate landing target.
Tom McCullough (Aston Martin, Performance Director)
Brilliant tactician, but not a race-engineer candidate unless Ferrari offers a shock restructuring.
Julian Simon-Chautemps (formerly Raikkonen engineer, currently behind the scenes)
Experienced, calm, and brilliant with veteran drivers.
A fit stylistically, but not recently on the front line.
WHAT LEWIS NEEDS IN 2026
After 12 years with Bono, Lewis is wired for a certain kind of voice:
It has to be concise but empathetic;
anticipatory, not reactive, emotionally neutral under pressure, crystal-clear in prioritization, fluent at turning “car behaviour” into “driver language” and
steady enough to counterbalance Lewis’s emotional peaks. Hey…I’m keeping it real here.
His 2025 Ferrari season exposed the issue:
Lewis was driving a Ferrari, but listening to someone who wasn’t speaking “Hamilton.”
The right race engineer could be worth two-tenths per lap on average race execution alone. Don’t believe me? Just ask Max Verstappen. ![]()
MY FOFA VERDICT — THE SHORTLIST
If I’m Vasseur, and I truly want to win:
1. RUTH BUSCOMBE — the perfect
cultural and technical fit
2. Dom Riefstahl — highest Hamilton
synergy
3. Riccardo Corte — clean-sheet reset
4. Xevi Pujolar — if Audi chaos frees him
Anything else feels like Ferrari playing it safe instead of playing for a championship.
And both Lewis and Ferrari don’t have time for safe.
