Twist in the saga: Massa’s unexpected Brazil GP visit

Former Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa made an unexpected return to the Brazilian Grand Prix, reversing his initial decision to stay away from the event. Amid his legal battle against the sport and the FIA over the historic ‘crashgate’ scandal, Massa had contemplated skipping his home race in pursuit of being retrospectively crowned the 2008 world champion and potentially embarrassing F1 with his presence. However, the 42-year-old Sao Paulista ultimately couldn’t resist the allure of his local track.

F1 had previously requested that Massa step aside from his official role as an F1 Ambassador during the ongoing legal dispute – which he duly abided. But despite not being banned from attending the Interlagos circuit, Massa chose to keep a low profile anyway, claiming it was a personal choice.

Nevertheless, Massa’s eventual and surprising presence at the Brazilian GP was more than that of a mere spectator, as he held a paddock and grid pass. He remarked, “I couldn’t avoid coming here at all. This is my place.”

While Massa’s return to the paddock raised some eyebrows, he was quick to clarify that it should not be misconstrued as a sign of his legal actions against the sport coming to an end. “I am fighting for justice in sport,” Massa emphasized, hinting that the legal battle over the ‘crashgate’ controversy remains unresolved. “We are waiting for the FIA and FOM to answer the (lawyer’s) letter.”
