After months of uncertainty and speculation surrounding his performance and future, Sergio Perez seems to be finding his groove once again – much to the relief of Red Bull team consultant Dr. Helmut Marko.
In recent times, and even throughout the Brazilian GP weekend, the Mexican driver’s form had been a topic of discussion among Formula 1 enthusiasts and insiders, leading to rumours of his potential ousting from Red Bull, despite his contract running until 2024. However, Dr. Marko, a powerful figure in the team, has come forward to express his satisfaction with Perez’s recent performances.
“It was a fascinating fight,” Marko exclaimed, reflecting on Perez’s thrilling battle with two-time champion Fernando Alonso for the final podium spot at the Brazilian Grand Prix. “Unbelievable – the position changes, the chase, how they worked tactically. Racing at its finest.”
Despite narrowly missing out on the podium due to a last-minute mistake that resulted in a Perez-Alonso photo finish, Dr. Marko remains optimistic about the 33-year-old’s progress and recovery. “The mistake on the last lap was that he didn’t come out of the third corner properly, but that’s easy for me to say,” the 80-year-old admitted.
Dr. Marko believes that Perez’s recent showing suggests he may be emerging from his performance slump. “His pace has been good since Mexico, both in qualifying and in the race,” said the Austrian. “He had some bad luck in Austin, but he now has a 30 point lead over (Lewis) Hamilton, so now we can assume that he will keep second place.”
