Radical new Pirelli tyre in development for 2025

In response to widespread dissatisfaction from drivers and teams about tyre performance, Pirelli is in the midst of developing a revolutionary tyre set to make its entrance into Formula 1 in 2025. The move comes on the heels of the recent Grand Prix at Interlagos, where severe tyre degradation came to the forefront, inciting criticism from competitors over the challenges of sustaining optimal race pace.

Pirelli’s head, Mario Isola, has acknowledged the wave of criticism and assures that the company is deeply invested in evolving their product. “We’re dissecting the connection between tyre wear and on-track dynamics,” Isola elaborated. “Our goal is to engineer a tyre that wears in a manner that complements the racing.”

The issue was magnified by comments from Max Verstappen post-Brazil, who aired his grievances regarding the current tyres, noting the struggle to fully exploit the cars’ performance capabilities. This sentiment is echoed across the grid and has become a focal point in Pirelli’s developmental strategy.

Isola has, however, offered a caveat; completely eliminating tyre degradation isn’t the goal, as it’s a critical aspect of race strategy, potentially turning races into unengaging, predictable affairs. “Tyre wear is the catalyst for much of the track action,” he declared, underscoring the importance of balancing tyre longevity with strategic race elements.

The vision for Pirelli’s future tyres involves finding a sweet spot—a tyre that reduces excessive wear yet preserves the strategic intricacies that can lead to dynamic, multi-stop races. Isola added, “Without varied tyre wear, we risk a procession rather than a race. We need to maintain the element of competition that different wear rates can provide.”

Amid these technical and strategic complexities, the resolve for progress is clear. As Isola summed up, “Drivers are clear in their desire for tyres that can endure more assertive racing,” signalling Pirelli’s direction towards accommodating a more robust racing experience.
