Axed Russian Mazepin returns to F1-style circuits

Nikita Mazepin is gearing up for his comeback on Formula 1 circuits – even though he remains locked out of the top category of global motor racing for now. The Russian is still facing significant challenges to relaunch his career amid ongoing sanctions against Russia. It’s been nearly two years since the Ukraine-Russian conflict led to his departure from Formula 1 and his exit from the European continent altogether, but the 24-year-old is at least now ready to return to top-tier racing.

He revealed his immediate plans at a Russian sports industry forum, stating, “I will compete in the Asian Le Mans Series for the second time.” Mazepin, who will be racing an LMP2-class car for 99 Racing, expressed his excitement about the series expanding its horizons. “This year the racing has become more interesting there,” he said, noting that the races now include venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Malaysia.

Despite his enthusiasm, Mazepin acknowledged the rustiness that might have set in due to his prolonged absence from asphalt track racing. “I haven’t sat in a car on an asphalt track for a long time,” he admitted, hoping that his skills remain sharp. “I hope I haven’t lost my experience and that some testing will be enough.”

The series begins at Sepang, the former Malaysian GP venue, next month. However, Mazepin’s future racing plans remain uncertain due to the restrictions that limit his ability to participate in international events at the level he aspires to. He mentioned his ongoing struggle with European travel restrictions, saying, “Unfortunately, international starts of the level and format that I would like are impossible this year.”

Despite a recent legal victory, Mazepin is still hindered by visa issues. “We won the case in the EU court, so theoretically I have the opportunity to come to Europe and perform. But in reality, there’s no possibility as I can’t get the Schengen (visa),” he explained. Nonetheless, Mazepin is determined to overcome these obstacles, concluding with, “But I’m working on it.”
