Max Verstappen’s extraordinary supremacy over the entire F1 field this year, including his teammate Sergio Perez, has set a new benchmark in the sport. Norbert Haug, the former Mercedes boss and still a respected figure when mentioned in the paddock, has offered his insights on this remarkable era. Haug emphasizes the historical significance of Verstappen’s performance.
“Such a clear superiority or inferiority, depending on which perspective you look at the competitive situation, has never happened in the history of Formula 1 since 1950,” Haug remarked during an exclusive interview with DPA.
What makes Verstappen’s dominance even more intriguing is not just his ability to win races but how he does it. His precision, racecraft, and consistency have left spectators and competitors awestruck, even if his personality and style still polarises.
However, as we dissect this phenomenon, questions arise about the implications for the sport’s overall excitement. With one team and driver seemingly totally untouchable, can Formula 1 really maintain its status as the pinnacle of motorsport? Isn’t it just the pinnacle of Verstappen/Red Bull instead?
Haug, though, staunchly defends Red Bull Racing and Verstappen against any unwarranted criticism. He argues that their dominance is a testament to their excellence rather than a weakness in the sport’s competitiveness.
“As much as this speaks for the overwhelming strength of Verstappen and Red Bull, it clearly shows that the competition in 2023 was simply nowhere near good enough,” Haug asserts, highlighting the need for other teams to step up to the challenge.
