Rumours debunked: Audi CEO Dollner fully backs F1 project

Audi’s Formula 1 entry in 2026 has been a topic of intense speculation, especially with the recent appointment of Gernot Dollner as the new CEO. Dollner, known for his cost-cutting measures, had fueled rumors that Audi might reconsider its commitment to enter the sport through a partnership with Sauber. However, these speculations have been put to rest.

Manager Magazin, a leading German business monthly, has reported that Dollner is, in fact, backing the F1 endeavor. While Dollner has been restricted from making public statements following his departure from VW earlier this year, he reportedly reassured colleagues at a recent Audi AG management conference about the continuity of the Sauber-Audi project.

This affirmation is further supported by comments from Oliver Hoffman, a top Audi board member. When questioned about the F1 project, he emphasized its value for Audi. A media report from DPA news agency quoted a source from the meeting saying, “leaving was not an option,” and noted that Dollner did not intervene, suggesting his tacit agreement.

Auto Motor und Sport, another reputable outlet, corroborated this narrative, stating that Dollner has a positive attitude regarding the F1 project. With his legally required 100-day confidentiality obligation as a new board member now expiring, Dollner is anticipated to make a public statement on the matter soon.
