Formula 1 may be pinning its hopes on Pirelli to enhance the racing spectacle under the current regulations. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is among those eyeing the 2024 season with keen interest, pointing out that the success of the season hinges significantly on Pirelli’s tyre innovation for the ground effect cars.
“As we look forward to Bahrain next year, the real test will be how the Pirelli tyres perform with the new cars,” Wolff said. “Let’s see how the Pirelli tyres behave on next year’s cars,” he added, hinting at a pivotal moment in F1’s ongoing evolution.
The decision to delay the ban on tyre-warming blankets seems strategically aligned with giving Pirelli the breathing room to focus on developing tyres better suited to the current F1 demands. Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater chief, highlighted the unprecedented stress levels on the tyres, saying, “We are currently measuring the highest stress on the tyres that we have ever seen.”
Tombazis also acknowledged a concerning trend: overtaking, which had become more accessible with the introduction of ground-effect cars in 2022, faced a setback this year. Wolff echoed these sentiments, observing a shift back towards managing tyre temperature and the impact it has on overtaking strategies.
Wolff expressed a desire for more dynamic races, citing the Qatar Grand Prix as an ideal example. “What we want to see is races like Qatar, where you can just go all out,” he stated.
In response to these challenges, Pirelli has been tasked by the F1 Commission to explore the development of a more robust tyre, one that can withstand the rigors of racing without degrading too quickly. This move could potentially unlock more aggressive racing strategies and enhance the overall spectacle of F1.
