Max unruffled: Red Bull’s 2026 engine plans under the spotlight

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 champion, remains unfazed amidst concerns about Red Bull’s engine strategy for the upcoming 2026 regulations. The team, currently at the pinnacle of F1, has embarked on a bold venture to design and build its own engines in collaboration with Ford.

Despite recent comments from team boss Christian Horner about the potential need for drivers to conserve electrical power under the new rules, Verstappen exudes confidence. Speaking to Motorsport-Magazin.com’s print edition, he addressed the buzz around Red Bull’s engine development. “I don’t think we’re stupid,” he stated. “But we’ll find out how good it will be.”

When it comes to the mood within Red Bull regarding the 2026 engine, Verstappen remains pragmatic. “It’s still not particularly exciting at the moment,” he said, indicating a level-headed approach to the forthcoming challenges.

Verstappen also shed light on the political landscape of Formula 1, particularly when it comes to rule changes. He noted the reluctance of rival teams to consider rule adjustments, saying, “Nobody will agree. This sport is so political. When we push for something, others think that maybe we’ve found something that could be an advantage. So they say no.”

He acknowledged this as a perennial aspect of the sport. “But it’s always been that way – it’s part of the sport. Sometimes you have to live with it because there’s nothing you can do about it anyway.”

Looking towards the future, Verstappen hinted that the 2026 engine rules could influence his decision on extending his contract beyond 2028. When asked if it could be a decisive factor, he responded, “Yes, possibly.”
