No regrets: Webber backs Piastri over Ricciardo’s F1 exit

Oscar Piastri’s entry into Formula 1, crowned by his recent rookie of the year award, has been shadowed by controversy, particularly in his move to McLaren. Piastri not only left his Alpine bosses in a lurch by exiting his contract but also nudged compatriot Daniel Ricciardo out of his F1 seat.

Piastri’s manager, ex-F1 driver Mark Webber, spoke to Soy Motor about this complex situation. He reassured Piastri, emphasizing that his decision shouldn’t be marred by guilt. “It is clear that Daniel had had two very tough seasons as a McLaren driver,” Webber explained. “If Oscar had not replaced him this year, another driver would have.”

The decision to leave Alpine and join McLaren wasn’t straightforward for Piastri. Webber revealed Piastri’s initial hesitation: “He said at the time that he was taking the seat away from another Australian and there aren’t many of us who have raced in Formula 1,” Webber said. Despite this, Webber believes the move was justified. “But what can you say? It was McLaren’s decision and in the end it was clearly the right one.”

Webber discussed the hard truths of Formula 1, where seizing opportunities is key. “But honestly, people thought we had a lot of options for 2023 but that wasn’t the case,” he noted. “McLaren was fantastic and very clear from the start, which is something that Oscar loved.”

The decisive factor for Piastri was McLaren’s eagerness to have him. “It was clear to him that someone wanted him to drive for him and so it was an easy decision for us,” Webber concluded, painting Piastri’s McLaren move as an inevitable step in Formula 1.
