From hero to critic: Legend’s take on lost art of F1 driving

Arturo Merzario, a former Formula 1 driver known for his iconic Marlboro cowboy hat and his heroic act of rescuing Niki Lauda from his burning Ferrari in 1976, recently reflected on the changing role of drivers in the sport. Speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 80-year-old Italian offered a critical view of modern F1, emphasizing the diminishing influence of drivers.

“In Nuvolari’s time, the driver was 70 percent of the final result,” Merzario said, highlighting a gradual decline over the decades. “In my time it was 50 percent. Now, without offending anyone, we have reached 10 percent.” He attributes this shift to advancements in technology and electronics, which have narrowed the gap between drivers.

Despite this, Merzario acknowledged that top talents like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton still manage to make a difference, albeit in a more constrained scope. “But first we were talking about seconds, then tenths, and now it’s even thousandths,” he noted, attributing their precision to rigorous training, simulators, and highly prepared teams.

Merzario also touched upon the evolving criteria for driver selection in F1, with “political and industrial interests” playing a significant role. He lamented the shift from talent-based choices in the 60s and 70s to the current “era of briefcases,” where financial backing often trumps pure skill.

When asked about changes he’d like to see in modern F1, Merzario expressed a desire to see the sport return to its more human elements. He believes the excessive reliance on technology and the pitwall, rather than human instinct and skill, has diluted the essence of racing. “We should return more to human sensations,” he stated, also pointing out the diminished role of mechanics who once had a more comprehensive understanding of the cars. “There is no longer the one who knows how to do it all,” he regretted, recognizing this trend as a broader issue in sports today.
