Corruption in the fast lane: Singapore GP surviving scandal

Singapore’s iconic Formula 1 night race seems to be navigating through the turbulent waters of a corruption scandal involving its promoter and a top government official. Last year, we uncovered that billionaire promoter Ong Beng Seng found himself entangled in a scandal leading to nearly 30 corruption charges against Minister S. Iswaran, who has now resigned.

BNN Breaking reported that Iswaran allegedly received kickbacks from Ong, including coveted tickets to the prestigious night race in Singapore. The allegations pointed towards potential inducements linked to a contract between Singapore GP and the Singapore Tourism Board, with instances in September and December 2022 drawing particular suspicion.

However, in a recent twist, Singapore’s trade and industry ministry, following an independent study, declared that there were “no unfavourable terms to the government” in the F1 contracts. BNN Breaking notes that while the Ministry’s defense of the F1 contracts highlights the event’s importance, the outcome of Iswaran’s case is poised to leave a significant mark on Singapore’s political and sporting landscape.

Further cementing the race’s position, Gutzy Asia released a government statement assuring that, as of now, there’s no evidence suggesting the F1 contracts or other agreements were structured to the government’s detriment.
