Madrid’s new F1 race could spell the end for Barcelona

Isabel Diaz Ayuso, Madrid’s community president, has acknowledged the potential impact of Madrid hosting a new Formula 1 Grand Prix, which might lead to the discontinuation of Barcelona’s long-standing race. This revelation comes as Madrid gears up for the official announcement of its own semi-urban circuit race, set for January 23.

In an interview with El Mundo, Ayuso addressed the situation, stating, “Whether Formula 1 leaves Barcelona or not has nothing to do with Madrid.” She emphasized the importance of retaining the event within Spain, expressing a preference for it to remain in Madrid or another Spanish region over losing it to another country.

Ayuso also highlighted the lack of governmental support for Madrid’s F1 project, expressing her frustrations with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. “We have already reached a point where I am not even asking the government for help. We simply ask them to leave the community of Madrid alone,” she stated, indicating a strained relationship between regional and national administrations.

Despite these challenges, Ayuso remains optimistic about Madrid’s potential in hosting a successful Formula 1 Grand Prix. “That Madrid will be seen to have the best Formula 1 grand prix,” she said, reflecting her high hopes for the upcoming event.
