F1’s next destination: Osaka plans to steal Suzuka’s thunder

In a significant development for Formula 1 in Japan, Osaka has emerged as a potential new host for the annual Japanese Grand Prix, a position long held by the iconic Suzuka circuit. Hiroshi Mizohata, the tourism bureau chief of Osaka prefecture, expressed this ambition following discussions with city officials and the Kansai Economic Federation.

“The F1 series has changed into a business model that can be operated on a private-sector basis,” Mizohata stated, signaling Osaka’s readiness to take on this prestigious motorsport event. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to leverage Osaka’s role as the host city for the 2025 World Expo. Mizohata sees Formula 1 not just as a motor race but as a comprehensive entertainment program, capable of significantly boosting the region’s global profile. “If we clear each step, and we do it step by step, it will be possible,” he added, outlining a measured approach to bringing F1 to Osaka.

Reported by the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, plans for an Osaka Grand Prix would see the race taking place on public roads, a departure from the traditional race track setting at Suzuka. Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura also weighed in, expressing openness to the idea and acknowledging the challenges while showing a willingness to support private management efforts for an F1 race in Osaka.
