F1 name-game: Will Racing Bulls overtake Visa Cash App RB?

The rebranding of Red Bull’s Alpha Tauri team to Visa Cash App RB has been met with widespread criticism, leading to speculation that the moniker ‘Racing Bulls’ may become the preferred reference for the Faenza-based Formula 1 team. Fans and journalists alike have voiced their disapproval of the new official name, with even Dr. Helmut Marko acknowledging it as a “tongue twister.” Team insiders are rumored to be using the acronym ‘V-CARB’ internally.

Tobias Gruner of Auto Motor und Sport revealed that the renaming process caused headaches at Formula 1’s London headquarters and took longer than anticipated to resolve all concerns. The ambiguity surrounding the ‘RB’ in the team’s name – whether it stands for team owner Red Bull or ‘Racing Bulls’ – added to the complexity, with the racingbulls.com domain redirecting to visacashapprb.

However, recent developments indicate that the company behind the team, formerly known as Alpha Tauri, has officially been renamed ‘Racing Bulls S.p.A’. This change is now reflected in the FIA’s updated 2024 F1 entry list, where ‘Racing Bulls S.p.A’ appears as the ‘company name’, while the ‘chassis name’ is listed as ‘RB’.

The renaming has sparked a debate on its potential adoption by TV commentators and the media. “It will be interesting to see whether Visa Cash App RB, which takes some getting used to, will catch on among TV commentators and written media,” Gruner commented, highlighting the challenge of integrating the new name into regular F1 discourse.
