Madrid GP: A corner almost as steep as Monza’s legendary banking

The upcoming Madrid Formula 1 circuit is set to break new ground with the introduction of one of the most steeply banked corners in the sport’s history. Announced this week as part of a ten-year race deal starting in 2026, the Madrid Grand Prix is generating excitement with its promise of innovation and grandeur, all funded entirely by private investment. This development casts uncertainty over the future of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Barcelona politician David Escude expressed skepticism about the claim of 100% private funding for the Madrid race in an interview with El Mundo Deportivo, stating, “I would be very surprised if it is really like that.” Amid these doubts, rumors suggest that Madrid is shelling out an impressive EUR 60 million per race to host Formula 1.

The Madrid circuit, designed by Italian race circuit designer Dromo, is expected to incorporate several novel features, including a groundbreaking 30-degree banked corner. This design far surpasses the 19-degree banking at Zandvoort but doesn’t quite eclipse the extreme 38-degree banking at the original Monza circuit.

Jarno Zafelli, the head of Dromo, shared insights with Marca sports newspaper about the circuit’s unique aspects. In addition to the extreme banking, the circuit will feature two short tunnels. “In the Valdebebas area, we will push the limits. We do not want to repeat elements from other circuits,” Zafelli said. He emphasized that Madrid’s circuit will have its distinct personality, facilitated by ample land availability for the layout. “The fact of not being limited like in a city allowed us to seek those limits,” he added.

Zafelli noted that the final design would depend on further discussions with F1, the FIA, and other stakeholders in the next design phase.
