Power struggle inside Red Bull: Marko speaks out admist Horner saga

In a definitive move, Red Bull Racing has officially confirmed that Christian Horner, the team’s principal caught in a whirlwind of controversy, will play a central role in the unveiling of their 2024 car. The announcement was made through a media advisory, noting that the launch event, set to be streamed live from Milton-Keynes, will prominently feature Horner alongside the team’s drivers, indicating a unified front despite the swirling rumors.

Adding to the intrigue, Dr. Helmut Marko, a figure central to the speculation around Red Bull’s internal dynamics, is also slated to attend the launch. This comes amidst strong rumors suggesting an internal push within the outfit’s Austrian faction to oust Horner. Currently under investigation by Red Bull Racing’s parent company for alleged “inappropriate behaviour” with a staff member, Horner’s situation has been a focal point of speculation, with his friend Bernie Ecclestone hinting at a campaign against him to “overthrow him.”

When pressed for comments on the situation surrounding Horner and its potential impact on the team’s season preparations, Marko offered a measured response, “I can’t tell you that or anything else on this topic. As long as the investigation is ongoing or there is no result, you will not hear anything from me. This is an ongoing process,” indicating a cautious approach to public discussions during the ongoing investigation. Despite the backdrop of rumored power struggles dating back several months, Marko expressed optimism, “I hope that we can quickly get our turbulence under control. Luckily our car is ready and we are well prepared.”

Shifting focus, Marko also touched upon the broader F1 landscape, particularly Lewis Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari for 2025. Viewing it as a “weakening for Mercedes,” Marko shared his astonishment and curiosity about the behind-the-scenes dynamics that led to Hamilton’s decision, especially against the backdrop of Mercedes being outpaced by Ferrari and McLaren in the latter half of the previous season. “It completely surprised me, too,” Marko admitted, adding, “Perhaps Hamilton noticed something that the outside world does not yet know about.”

Reflecting on the potential ramifications for Mercedes, Marko speculated on the strategic adjustments the team might face, “Normally, in a situation like this, your mind is already more focused on the new team. The current team then cannot let him take part in any serious innovations because he would of course take them with him.” He concluded with a nod to the excitement such developments bring to the sport, “The whole thing is excellent for the sport,” and humorously added, “Better than Netflix,” capturing the drama’s appeal beyond the racing circuit.

As for Max Verstappen’s reaction to the Hamilton news, Marko revealed, “He was just amused,” suggesting that the reigning champion sees the unfolding events with a sense of detachment, perhaps confident in his own position within the sport and his team.
