Verstappen speaks out: The truth behind Horner’s power struggle

The glitz and glamour of Red Bull’s 2024 car launch was juxtaposed against a backdrop of swirling controversy and speculation. Christian Horner and Max Verstappen found themselves in the eye of the storm, navigating through questions about a scandal that has the potential to shake the very foundations of Horner’s leadership at Red Bull.

Max Verstappen, the triple world champion, chose his words carefully, aware of the weight they carry. “Everything I’m going to say about that can of course be interpreted in a certain way,” he shared with De Telegraaf, hinting at the complex web of speculation surrounding the team’s management scandal. His choice to remain silent on the issue speaks volumes, underscoring the sensitivity of the situation at hand.

Rumors have been rife about Verstappen’s camp, including his father Jos and Dr. Helmut Marko, pushing for a change at the helm of the team. Verstappen, however, was quick to dispel such notions, reaffirming the strength of his relationship with Horner. “The relationship is the same as always, I can tell you that,” he stated, brushing off the rumors as baseless. “I don’t know who writes these kinds of things, but Christian and I are the same as always.”

Christian Horner, facing the media head-on amidst speculation he might step away from the limelight, stood firm. “For me, it’s business as usual and I’m confident,” he declared, his presence at the launch a bold statement of defiance. Horner acknowledged the distraction the scandal has caused but emphasized the unity within the team. “It’s inevitably a distraction,” he admitted, “but as a team we are absolutely united.”

Horner also addressed the rumored divide within the team, categorically denying any rift between himself and the Dutch and Austrian factions. “It’s not like that at all,” he asserted. His recounting of recent interactions with Jos and Max Verstappen further illustrated the solidarity within the team, a crucial element as they head into a season filled with high expectations.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the duration of Red Bull GmbH’s investigation into the allegations, Horner’s commitment to the team remains steadfast. “I’m absolutely committed to this team,” he affirmed, highlighting the overwhelming support he has received from within the team and the broader F1 community. “I fully deny the accusations and my role obviously continues,” Horner stated, underlining his intention to clear his name and continue leading Red Bull Racing.

The unveiling of the RB20 was not just about the car; it was a show of force and unity from Red Bull Racing. With new CEO Oliver Mintzlaff in attendance, speculation about the future leadership of the team was inevitable. Yet, Max Verstappen remained focused on the season ahead, confident that the team’s internal cohesion remains unshaken by the ongoing scandal. “No,” he said when asked if the controversy had distracted the team. “I feel that everyone is very focused and very motivated. The spirit in the team is honestly better than ever.”
