Ricciardo’s not-so-secret plan to reclaim Perez’s seat

Daniel Ricciardo has not-so-subtly hinted once again at a potential return to Red Bull’s premier Formula 1 team for the 2025 season, amidst speculation that he could even make the switch as early as mid-this season. This speculation arises from ongoing observations of Sergio Perez’s performance alongside team ace Max Verstappen, which could potentially open up Ricciardo’s spot at the energy drink company’s junior outfit for Liam Lawson.

Despite the buzzing rumors, the 34-year-old Australian driver insisted that he wants to maintain a grounded outlook. Speaking at the Bahrain test, Ricciardo told Speed Week, “The return to Red Bull Racing is the bigger picture, but to be honest, I’m not thinking about it at the moment. I now want to concentrate fully on my work here – it won’t do me any good to dream about something else. My contribution last year was appreciated, and I want to continue to contribute here.”

Ricciardo’s path back to the Red Bull fold follows a challenging period with McLaren, which ended in his departure – before the junior Red Bull (then Alpha Tauri) team parted ways with Nyck de Vries mid last season, leading to Ricciardo’s recall from the reserves.

Reflecting on his journey and looking ahead, Ricciardo admits the tumultuous time with McLaren was taxing but shares his renewed vigor for the sport. “I was a little surprised at myself, how eager I am to work and drive,” he commented. “That’s the unmistakable sign for me that I’m ready for the season. It didn’t feel like a break at all, but my 2023 was so unusual that I didn’t need it. I want to perform so well here that I force myself into that (Red Bull) seat.”
