Krack’s Desperate Bid to Keep Alonso From Mercedes

Aston Martin’s team principal Mike Krack is on a mission to secure Fernando Alonso’s allegiance for the 2025 season amidst a shifting driver market. The F1 community was left agape as Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes to join Ferrari, a move rumored to be influenced not only by his “childhood dream” but also by Mercedes’ nurturing of Kimi Antonelli, Toto Wolff’s latest protégé, as Hamilton’s potential successor.

Wolff had initially earmarked an extensive test program for Antonelli, slated to start as soon as he turns 18 this August, with eyes on promoting him in 2026, coinciding with the end of Hamilton’s then-existing contract. However, with Hamilton’s unexpected exit, Wolff is now assessing whether Antonelli, bypassing F3 for Formula 2, is “ready for 2025 or for 2026.”

Speculation abounds on who will fill the Mercedes void, with Alonso, at 42, considered an ideal candidate for a temporary stint before Antonelli steps up. Yet, opinions diverge, as Christian Danner explicitly stated, “If I had the choice between an Alonso and a Mick Schumacher, I can’t take Mick,” citing Alonso’s superior prowess in every aspect.

The driver market’s unpredictability keeps everyone on their toes, with Danner suggesting Wolff has the luxury of choice, pointing to a wide array of potentials including Hulkenberg, Piastri, maybe Norris, or even Verstappen, depending on developments at Red Bull.

Amidst this, Krack remains a steadfast supporter of Alonso, expressing his admiration for F1’s dynamism and Alonso’s undeniable talent. “I am also a fan of Formula 1,” Krack acknowledged, emphasizing the need to pivot discussions towards the future amidst Hamilton’s surprising switch.

Krack is clear about his aspirations for Alonso, stating, “First of all, Fernando needs to decide whether he wants to continue his career or not – he’s made this clear. But if he wants to, then I hope that we will be in pole position.” He remains hopeful that Alonso will choose to stay with Aston Martin, valuing Alonso’s commitment to giving his best, “because Fernando is Fernando,” regardless of the team colors he dons.
