Verstappen’s bold ultimatum: Staying with Red Bull only if Marko does

Max Verstappen has highlighted Dr. Helmut Marko’s pivotal role at Red Bull, calling him the “glue” that secures his commitment to the team. Amidst a notable power struggle at the Formula 1 team co-owned by an Austrian-Thai energy drink conglomerate, the spotlight turns to the possibility of Marko, aged 80, soon exiting the scene. This speculation aligns with whispers of a ‘Marko clause’ in Verstappen’s contract extending to 2028, underscored by his pole position claim in Saudi Arabia hinting at his own departure should Marko leave.

Verstappen openly acknowledged to Sky Italia, “The team knows that he is an important component and how important he is for me,” emphasizing Marko’s significant achievements alongside Dietrich Mateschitz and his increased importance post-Mateschitz. Verstappen added, “But not only that. Just look at everything he achieved with Dietrich Mateschitz, and how much more important he was after his passing. He’s the glue of the team – one of those people who keeps everyone together.” He further stated, “The team knows what I think of him and how important his presence is,” hinting at the potential chaos of Marko’s removal by saying, “It’s an understatement to say that it would be madness.”

The backdrop to Marko’s potential departure involves Christian Horner’s launch of an internal inquiry into the leak of his affair details, suspecting Marko’s involvement. The power struggle sees Marko and Horner on opposing sides, with implications for the team’s leadership and direction.

Former F1 driver Alex Wurz commented on the situation, saying, “This is a very, very big problem for them that goes beyond just the paddock,” as the saga unfolds. Marko’s defiance in speaking to the media and the letters from Honda and Ford expressing concern over the affair underscore the tensions.

With Horner’s public denials and threats against Marko, the latter contemplates his future. Marko shared, “In the end it’s up to me to decide what to do, but the theoretical possibility (of leaving the team) exists. But this is a difficult question. I have another conversation with my superior tomorrow,” referring to a meeting with Red Bull co-CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, “and then we’ll see. But everything has to be right so that I want to continue working here. We want peace in the team.” Additionally, Marko emphasized, “We need clarification on the matter to prevent damage to the brand and the team. The important thing is that we don’t do anything that can cost Max the title.”

As this complex narrative unfolds, legal action against Horner could be a new chapter, alongside a significant severance payment to the staffer involved in the affair. Amid these developments, Ralf Schumacher suggests a simple solution, “Christian Horner could solve this problem now,” he remarked, adding, “He could resign.”
