Sochi ready & willing to revive Russian GP

Sirius territory’s top official has hinted at the potential resurgence of the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix in Sochi, provided new terms are agreed upon. This announcement breathes life into the possibility of the sport’s return to Russia, following its suspension due to the outbreak of the Ukraine-Russia conflict in early 2022. At that time, Formula 1 decisively terminated the Russian GP contract, stating it was “impossible to hold” the event under “current circumstances.”

The decision to cancel the Sochi race inflicted a significant financial wound on Formula 1, reportedly causing a $50 million deficit. Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and subsequent partial dismantlement of the Sochi circuit, Elena Shmeleva, chair of the federal Russian Sirius territory, remains optimistic about the track’s future. She declared, “Formula 1? We are waiting. The Formula 1 venue itself remains,” indicating readiness to host the grand prix once again.

Shmeleva also highlighted the versatility of the venue, noting a major cycling event had recently taken place there, with expectations of hosting more significant events in the future. However, she acknowledged that only a fraction of the original circuit, a 2.4-kilometre loop within the Olympic Park — the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics — still mirrors a Formula 1 track. Nonetheless, she assured that “the entire large ring can be recreated for any type of event, such as Formula 1, provided that they are ready to have it,” suggesting a full restoration of the circuit is feasible should Formula 1 decide to return.

  1. I think Liberty Media needs to get a lot better at it. F1 is arguably the premier racing series in the world. It’s more than just a show. The only thing they seem to know how to do is add sprint races , consider reverse grids, and limit testing. Next they’ll want to go back to Sochi. Please understand that the circumstances that got Sochi canceled still exist. They don’t seem to understand there’s a difference between Monaco and a fake marina in Miami. The world stage requires a top flight approach. I’m not suggesting that profit’s not important. I’m just saying it’s not the only thing that is.
