F1’s meteorite shower of scandals: Inside the chaos

Observers note that Formula 1 is currently overwhelmed by a relentless onslaught of scandals and continual issues, as the series grapples with an ongoing “meteorite shower of accusations” and “one problem after another.”

Amid this backdrop, Toto Wolff had previously alerted the public about the potential legal battle ahead, following accusations by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem of improper information exchanges with his wife Susie, who works for the F1-affiliated female-only F1 Academy series. In a bold move, Susie Wolff has now “personally filed a criminal complaint” in the French legal system, signaling her readiness to defend her integrity “all the way in court.”

The situation is further complicated by existing controversies, including the dispute involving Christian Horner and internal conflicts within Red Bull. Additionally, allegations were recently levied against FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem for his alleged interference in steward decisions in 2023 and efforts to halt the approval of the Las Vegas Grand Prix’s new layout.

However, the FIA’s ethics committee has now cleared Ben Sulayem of any misconduct, affirming that there was “no evidence to substantiate the allegations.”

These developments occur against the backdrop of anticipated financial discussions related to the upcoming Concorde Agreement, involving F1’s commercial rights entity controlled by Liberty Media on the one hand, and the FIA on the other, overseen by the controversial Ben Sulayem. Following the ethics committee’s findings, Ben Sulayem emphasized the collective responsibility within the sport, stating, “At the end of the day, we’re in the same boat” and underscoring the shared objective to not let the sport falter: “We may have different missions, but we cannot let the sport sink.”
