$4bn deal alert: F1 owner set to conquer MotoGP too

The landscape of premier motorsports is on the verge of a seismic shift with increasing evidence pointing towards Liberty Media, the commercial powerhouse behind Formula 1, setting its sights on acquiring MotoGP, the pinnacle of motorcycle racing. Speculation has been rife, gaining substantial weight, as whispers of a buyout have solidified into a near-tangible reality.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, the stalwart leader of MotoGP, recently hinted at the veracity of these rumours without outright confirmation, amidst buzzing reports of ongoing negotiations between Dorna Sports’ current proprietors, Bridgepoint, and Liberty Media in a deal potentially valued in the billions. “The majority shareholders of Dorna are investment funds, which buy things to sell them,” Ezpeleta disclosed, fuelling speculation further by mentioning the possibility of combined F1-MotoGP event weekends.

In an update that has stirred the motorsport community, the Financial Times has now reported that discussions have taken a definitive turn, now being exclusive, with the acquisition price tag speculated to exceed $4 billion. This development comes after Liberty Media purportedly outmaneuvered competing bids, including one led by Ari Emanuel of TKO, a notable entity in the sports and entertainment sector, and another from Qatar.

However, this ambitious move by Liberty Media isn’t without its hurdles. Concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest have been raised, with experts suggesting that regulatory scrutiny over the dual ownership of F1 and MotoGP is highly probable.

Despite the swirling rumours and the high stakes involved, official comments from the parties at the heart of these discussions – Dorna Sports and Liberty Media – have been notably absent. Yet, the Financial Times hints at a nearing conclusion, stating, “An agreement is close,” albeit suggesting that a formal announcement might be deferred to the following week, keeping fans and observers alike on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the next chapter in the world of premier racing championships.
