Max Verstappen has expressed optimism about teaming up with Laurent Mekies, Red Bull’s incoming team principal, as the squad heads into this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The Dutch driver, a three-time world champion, confirmed his positive outlook during a media session ahead of the race at Spa-Francorchamps. “I’ve had good chats with Laurent already, and I’m keen to build on that,” Verstappen said. “He’s got a sharp technical mind from his time at Ferrari and the FIA, which could help us push back against the recent challenges from McLaren and Mercedes.”
Mekies steps in after Christian Horner’s abrupt departure earlier this month, a move that shook the paddock. The Frenchman, previously at the helm of Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls, inherits a squad still leading the constructors’ standings but facing mounting pressure on track.
Verstappen, whose contract runs until 2028, dismissed any immediate concerns about his future amid the leadership shift. “Stability is key, but change can bring fresh ideas,” he added. “We’re focused on getting the car back to winning ways.”
Red Bull hopes Mekies’ engineering background will steady the ship, especially with upgrades planned for Spa. As the season’s second half kicks off, all eyes will be on how this new dynamic plays out.
