Belgian GP Sprint Qualifying: Epic Highlights

Oscar Piastri stormed to Sprint pole at the Qatar Grand Prix, edging out McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in a tense qualifying session under the Lusail lights. The Australian’s lap of 1m20.830s sealed the top spot, with Norris just 0.106s behind in a front-row lockout for the papaya squad.

George Russell grabbed third for Mercedes, 0.145s off the pace, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc slotted into fourth, ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in fifth. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen could only manage sixth, struggling with pace as the session unfolded.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz took seventh, followed by Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg in eighth. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10.

The session kicked off with SQ1, where Piastri set the early benchmark. A red flag halted proceedings when Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu spun into the gravel at Turn 7, but the field regrouped quickly. Eliminated were Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, RB’s Yuki Tsunoda, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas, and Zhou.

SQ2 saw tighter battles, with Verstappen scraping through in 10th. Out went Williams’ Alex Albon, RB’s Daniel Ricciardo – in what could be his final outing if rumors hold – Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, Kick Sauber’s rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, and Mercedes’ debutant Kimi Antonelli, who showed promise but missed the cut.

In the decisive SQ3, Piastri nailed his lap on the first runs, and while others improved on their seconds, no one could touch him. Norris pushed hard but fell short, setting up an intriguing Sprint race.

Verstappen’s qualifying woes continue his tricky weekend, starting from sixth as he chases the title. With points on offer in tomorrow’s Sprint, McLaren looks primed to extend their constructors’ lead.
