Hamilton Unveils Mercedes Signing Amid Ferrari Shift

Lewis Hamilton has shed light on Mercedes’ decision to bring in teenage talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli as his successor for the 2025 season, while Ferrari pushes ahead with internal tweaks amid a tough debut year for the seven-time champion.

Speaking after the Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton admitted he had inside knowledge of Antonelli’s promotion months ago, even before his own switch to Ferrari was public. “I knew about Kimi joining Mercedes back in the winter,” Hamilton said. “He’s got real speed, and the team sees him as the future. It’s a smart pick to pair him with George [Russell].”

Antonelli, the 18-year-old Italian who skipped Formula 2 to jump straight into F1, has impressed in testing despite a rocky start. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed the move earlier this year, aiming to blend youth with Russell’s experience as the squad rebuilds post-Hamilton.

Meanwhile, Ferrari is shaking things up on the technical side. Team boss Fred Vasseur announced a key engineer swap for Hamilton, with Riccardo Adami stepping in to replace Peter Bonnington, who stayed at Mercedes. This comes as Ferrari grapples with inconsistent pace in 2025, sitting third in the constructors’ standings behind Red Bull and McLaren.

Hamilton, partnered with Charles Leclerc, has managed three podiums so far but no wins, a stark contrast to his dominant Mercedes era. “We’re making changes to get sharper,” Hamilton noted. “The focus is on 2026 regs now, but we can’t ignore the rest of this year.”

Ferrari’s adjustments include bolstering their aero department, with reports of new hires from rival teams to address development hiccups. Vasseur stressed the need for stability: “Lewis brings experience, and these shifts will help us gel.”

As the season heads to Zandvoort next, both teams eye progress. Mercedes sits second in the championship with Russell’s two victories, while Ferrari hunts for consistency to challenge at the front.
