Lewis Hamilton’s hopes for a strong finish at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix hit a snag due to a fuel shortage that emerged late in the race, as revealed by his team radio exchanges with Ferrari.
Starting from pole, the seven-time world champion led early on but slipped back after a pit stop strategy left him vulnerable. As the laps wound down, Hamilton radioed his engineer, Riccardo Adami, with a pointed question: “Are we low on fuel?” The response confirmed the issue, urging him to manage his pace carefully to avoid running dry before the chequered flag.
This revelation explains Hamilton’s conservative driving in the closing stages, where he held off challengers but couldn’t mount a serious attack on the leaders. Post-race, he admitted the shortfall disrupted his rhythm, saying it forced him into a defensive mode that didn’t suit the upgraded SF-25’s potential at Spa-Francorchamps.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur downplayed the drama, attributing it to aggressive early stints that burned through reserves faster than planned. However, the incident has sparked questions about the team’s fuel calculations, especially after similar scrutiny on Charles Leclerc’s car earlier in the season.
Hamilton, now in his first year with Ferrari after leaving Mercedes, finished fourth – a solid result amid wet conditions, but one that left him frustrated. “We had the pace, but small margins like this can change everything,” he told reporters. With the summer break looming, the Scuderia will review data to prevent repeats as they chase Red Bull in the constructors’ standings.
