Inside Mercedes’ Crisis Talks After Russell’s ‘Worst’ Claim

George Russell has downplayed suggestions of crisis talks at Mercedes following their underwhelming showing at the Belgian Grand Prix, clarifying that an upcoming team meeting is simply part of routine efforts to address recent form dips.

The British driver, who finished fifth at Spa-Francorchamps, admitted the result masked deeper issues with the car’s pace, especially against frontrunners like McLaren and Ferrari. Speaking after the race, Russell urged the team to revisit setups from earlier in the 2025 season, when cooler conditions suited their W16 better than the variable weather in Belgium.

“We’ve got a meeting planned, but it’s not some emergency summit,” Russell explained. “It’s about digging into the data and making smart tweaks. We’ve slipped back in qualifying and race trim lately, and we need to understand why.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff echoed this, stressing the session is a standard debrief rather than a reaction to one bad weekend. With young teammate Kimi Antonelli still finding his feet in his debut season, the focus remains on upgrades and consistency ahead of the summer break.

Russell’s comments come amid speculation about his long-term future at Brackley, though he dismissed contract worries, insisting his priority is performance gains. The team sits fourth in the constructors’ standings, trailing Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, but Russell believes small adjustments could reignite their challenge.
