Martin Brundle has shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics at Red Bull, suggesting that the team’s decision to part ways with Christian Horner hinged on full buy-in from Max Verstappen’s inner circle.
Speaking on Sky Sports during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, the former driver turned pundit revealed he had a direct chat with Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, just before the race. Brundle noted Jos seemed relaxed about the shake-up, which saw Horner ousted as team principal amid ongoing internal tensions and a dip in Red Bull’s on-track form.
“I got the sense that Team Verstappen was completely aligned with this move,” Brundle said. “Red Bull wouldn’t have gone ahead without their nod – it’s that straightforward.”
This comes after months of friction, with Jos Verstappen openly criticizing Horner earlier in the year, warning that his leadership could fracture the squad. Horner’s exit, announced in early July, paved the way for Laurent Mekies to step up, a change Brundle believes stabilizes things for Max, the four-time champion who’s been rumored to eye a switch to Mercedes.
With Red Bull still leading the constructors’ standings but facing stiffer competition from McLaren and Ferrari, Brundle reckons keeping Verstappen content is key. “Max is the cornerstone here,” he added. “This reset might just keep him locked in for the long haul.”
As the 2025 season hits its midpoint, Red Bull’s focus shifts to reclaiming dominance under new management, while Verstappen continues to chase a fifth title alongside teammate Sergio Perez.
