Alonso’s Bold Fix for F1 Wet Weather Woes

Fernando Alonso has floated a radical fix for Formula 1’s ongoing headache with rain-soaked races: rip up the smooth track surfaces and replace them with rougher asphalt, similar to certain highways that kick up zero spray.

Speaking after a frustrating Belgian Grand Prix where heavy downpours once again hampered visibility and forced delays, the Aston Martin driver argued that modern circuits’ glossy tarmac is the real culprit. “We’ve raced in torrential conditions before, like at Sepang, and it was manageable,” Alonso said. “But these new blacktop designs reflect like mirrors in the wet, blinding everyone behind.”

His proposal? Mandate a switch to coarser road surfaces across all F1 venues. It could slash the mist thrown up by tyres, letting drivers push harder without the constant red flags or shortened sessions that have plagued wet weekends this season. Alonso admits it might accelerate tyre degradation in dry runs, but he sees it as a starting point worth exploring.

“We spot highways with no spray at all,” he added. “If we adopt that as standard, circuits could race through storms without issues. Sure, it won’t be cheap for promoters, but as a driver, I’m tired of waiting around.”

This comes amid growing calls for solutions, especially with the 2026 car regs promising tweaks to wet-weather performance. Alonso, now in his 24th F1 campaign and chasing a third title with Aston Martin, remains vocal on track safety. His idea might ruffle feathers among circuit owners facing hefty resurfacing bills, but it underscores a push for bolder changes to keep races flowing, rain or shine.
