Lewis Hamilton has sparked debate in the Formula 1 paddock after describing Ferrari’s recent performance slump as a “tragedy” during a post-race interview at the Belgian Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion, who joined the Italian team this season from Mercedes, made the remark following a frustrating weekend at Spa-Francorchamps where he finished outside the points. “It’s a tragedy what’s happening here,” Hamilton said, pointing to ongoing car setup issues and strategic missteps that have plagued Ferrari’s 2025 campaign.
His words quickly drew criticism from some quarters, with former Ferrari driver and pundit Rubens Barrichello calling them “inappropriate” for a team insider. “You don’t air dirty laundry like that in public,” Barrichello told reporters. “Lewis is new to the family, but Ferrari demands loyalty above all.”
Team principal Fred Vasseur, however, downplayed the controversy, insisting Hamilton’s frustration stems from a shared desire to improve. “Lewis is passionate, and we’re all feeling the pain,” Vasseur said. “These comments come from a place of wanting to win, not divide.”
Hamilton later clarified his stance on social media, emphasizing his commitment to Ferrari despite the SF-25’s struggles against dominant rivals like Red Bull and McLaren. “I’m here to fight and fix this, not complain,” he posted.
The incident highlights growing tensions within Ferrari, who sit third in the constructors’ standings midway through the season. With Hamilton paired alongside Charles Leclerc, the team had high hopes for 2025, but reliability woes and inconsistent pace have left them chasing shadows.
As the summer break looms, Ferrari faces pressure to regroup ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, where Hamilton aims to channel his outspoken energy into on-track results.
